Megan West,
born in New York, started playing drums at the age of twelve. After
graduating high school she attended the Berklee College of Music in
Boston,
MA. She played with various bands in and around the Boston area, and
in 1975 she put her first big band together. The band played on Cape
Cod and the Boston area for about three years, recording its first record
in 1978. Remember records?
Megan moved to Los Angeles and put together another
top flight band. She also played in the New Glenn Miller Orchestra,
the new Harry James Band, Sammy Kaye ( a band that swayed, but did little
swinging) and has backed up various artists, too numerous to mention.
In 2000, after a ten year voluntary retirement from
the music scene, she put together her current big band. This band
features young talented musicians from the greater Los Angeles area.
In April this band recorded its first CD. The album was recorded
live, in front of a small group of invited guests and the entire session
was completed in three hours!
Just listed to the soft strains of the band's
adopted theme of "Snowfall". Listen to the excitement
of "Oh So Good" . There's the unique sax voicing on
the ballads. Jump. Jitterbug and Lindy Hop to "Chicken
Reel". Marvel at the driving technique of Megan West on the
drums playing "Elk's Parade" and "Sing, Sing,
Sing". Also enjoy the jazz scat-singing on the old standard,
"Honeysuckle Rose".
If you like a swinging big band with brazen brass
and a super driving jazz drummer( a' la Buddy Rich), you MUST have this
compact disc.
The Megan West Swingin' Band is a live performance
is a sight to behold, with the swinging of horns, the waving of the
derby hats (mutes), the vocals and impressions of Megan West, the
enthusiasm of the young talented musicians and the unbelievable drumming
of its "girl" leader.
This is the story of Megan West (the little drummer
"girl") and her swingin' big band. A swing band for the
new millenium. |
